Why Should You Care About Changing The Copyright System
This essay will serve as an advocation for the instatement of compulsory licensing practices in regards to sampling in music. I have been intensely interested in the workings of copyright for a couple years, but have only recently sought out avenues to express my thoughts, findings, and ideas for change. I must begin with an admission: I do not believe that anyone can own or monopolize upon an idea. Intellectual property is a fundamental assumption held by copyright law, one which I will hopefully make the reader question and rethink for themselves. Before beginning, I feel it is only fair to those reading that I answer the question: ââ¬Å"Why should you care about changing the copyright system?â⬠1. Because fundamentally, no creative material should be ââ¬Å"off-limitsâ⬠within an art form. If there are restrictions and monopolies within an art, the art suffers and must conform to an ever-generalizing standard of conventional norms. 2. Financially speaking, both parties can benefit graciously with less strenuous restrictions. Later on, we will explore the possibilities of a future for copyright. 3. Less corruption. This can be interpreted in multiple ways. First of all, if the absurd idea that everybody who downloads music files online is a criminal is challenged, there is ââ¬Å"less crimeâ⬠and corruption. But also, the ever-lengthening amount of power that copyright holders have can certainly be characterized as corrupt. These powers should be examined and reined in. 4.
